Tiger sharks over the sandy bottom off Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah is a lone island in the far south of the Maldives, about 500 kilometres from Malé and just below the equator. It is the only atoll in the country made of a single island: there is no lagoon, and the open ocean begins right at the reef. Big animals come close to shore, and the dive sites are only minutes from the harbour by boat. Since 2020 the island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The reason to come is tiger sharks in every month of the year. The main encounter site, Tiger Point, is a sandy bottom at 10–15 metres: the group kneels or hovers in a line while the sharks pass by. Open Water certification and good buoyancy are usually enough for this dive. Thresher sharks show up on early dives along the walls, October to April brings a chance of schooling hammerheads, and oceanic mantas and whale sharks are seen most often from March to May. Grey reef and silvertip sharks, turtles and schools of tuna are also part of the picture.

The best-known site for experienced divers is Farikede, off the southern tip of the island. The reef slopes from 10–15 metres and then drops sharply into the open ocean, with visibility often at 30–40 metres. It is a cleaning station where grey reef, silvertip, whitetip and thresher sharks gather, with occasional hammerheads, whale sharks and mola mola, and humpback whales passing during migration. Farikede has been a protected marine area since 2020: anchoring and any extraction are prohibited. Currents around Fuvahmulah can be strong and changeable, so the deep sites call for drift diving experience and Advanced Open Water certification.

Shark Heaven is an SSI Official Training Center on Fuvahmulah. The team is local — guides and boat captains with fifteen years and more on these waters. The centre runs up to three dives a day, picks sites by weather, current and the group’s experience, and gives a detailed briefing before every dive. Beyond scuba, Shark Heaven offers guided freediving and sport fishing — trolling, jigging and popping.

The stay is at Scuba Haven, a guesthouse on the south-east side of the island that has been open since 2016. There are no resorts on Fuvahmulah: it is an inhabited local island, and visitors stay in small guesthouses run by island families. Scuba Haven has six rooms — five Deluxe doubles and one twin, all air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, hot water and free Wi-Fi. The airport is a 2–3 minute drive, the harbour where the dive boats leave is 3–5 minutes away, and Bondofanno beach is a 30-second walk. Several of the island’s popular restaurants are nearby. Dive groups can book the whole house.

Everything practical is covered: airport pickup, harbour transfers, three meals a day, tanks and weights are part of the package. What is left is choosing the length — from three nights with six dives to ten nights with twenty-three. You usually do not dive on arrival day, and you need an 18–24 hour interval after the last dive before the domestic flight back to Malé; the packages are built around both.

A day on Fuvahmulah goes like this: an early start from the harbour at the south-east tip of the island — thresher sharks are seen most often at dawn — two or three dives with short boat rides, rest in the afternoon, and back in the water the next day. There are no long transfers between sites, and the schedule follows the group rather than a big resort’s timetable. The guesthouse suggests planning at least six dives over two or three days: that gives more than one tiger shark encounter and leaves time for the reef and the deep sites.

Between dives the island itself is worth exploring: two freshwater lakes — rare in the Maldives — Thoondu beach with its white sand and pebbles, the ruins of the Havitta Buddhist stupa and old mosques. Fuvahmulah is a Muslim island: alcohol is not available, swimming on public beaches is in modest clothing, and there is no bikini beach yet.

Who it suits: divers who come for sharks and would trade an overwater villa for a short ride to the best sites. Beginners have a place here too — Shark Heaven teaches SSI programmes from Try Scuba to Advanced Open Water, and a first certification is usually enough for the tiger shark dive.

Shark Heaven lists three main sites: Farikede, a deep slope to 30 metres off the southern tip; Tiger Point, a shallow site at 10 metres; and Thundi, down to 30 metres. The site and timing are chosen on the day by weather and current: the island has no lagoon, and in rough weather the boats move to more sheltered sites. Open Water is enough for most tiger shark dives; for the deep sites with current the guesthouse recommends Advanced Open Water. Tanks and weights are included, other equipment is rented. A 3 mm wetsuit is enough. Wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed.

When to go

Best time

January to April — the calmest seas and best visibility

Visibility
Often 30–40 m at Farikede

Tiger sharks are around Fuvahmulah all year, and so are threshers, most often on early dives. January to April is the north-east monsoon: calmer seas, better visibility and the busiest season, when the guesthouse's six rooms fill up 2–3 months ahead. October to April is hammerhead season, and oceanic mantas and whale sharks are seen most often March to May. May to September is the south-west monsoon: more wind, rain and swell, and fewer people on the sites. Weather rarely stops diving for long: on rough days the boats move to sheltered sites.

Getting there

Most guests fly into Velana International Airport in Malé and connect to a domestic flight to Fuvahmulah (FVM) — about 70 minutes. Allow 2–3 hours between the international arrival and the domestic departure. The guesthouse is a 2–3 minute drive from the airport, and guests are met on arrival.

The other route is through Gan in Addu Atoll, the nearest international airport to Fuvahmulah, with flights from Colombo twice a week. From Addu a public speedboat runs to Fuvahmulah in 45 to 90 minutes depending on the sea, though not every day.

Domestic flights have a lower baggage allowance than international ones, and excess weight is charged per kilo. A full set of dive gear weighs 15–20 kg: many divers bring only a mask, computer and wetsuit and rent the rest on the island. Allow 18–24 hours after your last dive before the flight back to Malé.
