Day-by-Day Programme

Arrival in Hurghada. Transfer to Port Ghalib. Board M/Y My Red Sea Explorer, meet the crew, and attend the safety briefing.

In the morning we leave Port Ghalib. The first, check dive is on a coastal reef off Marsa Alam: we test our gear and buoyancy and get used to the water. The second dive is at Elphinstone — a long, narrow reef with sheer walls and plateaus at its northern and southern tips. Soft corals, clouds of anthias and the first encounters with reef sharks. On the first day — 2–3 dives. In the evening the yacht heads out to open sea — an overnight crossing to Daedalus Reef.

Daedalus Reef — a massive reef formation roughly 180 km south of the Brother Islands. The reef is surrounded by sheer walls on all sides, with a plateau on its southern side running from 28 m at the reef to 40 m at the drop-off. The morning dive is at the northern tip: in good weather we push as far north as possible and drift along one of the walls. Reef sharks and hammerhead sharks are frequent here. Midday — the southern plateau, and in the evening a night dive on the wall beneath the yacht. 3–4 dives.

We keep exploring Daedalus. A dawn dive at the northern tip is the best time to meet hammerheads. Then drifts along the eastern and western walls: the marine life here is remarkably diverse — schools of surgeonfish, groupers, and trevallies, and fields of anemones with clownfish. 3–4 dives over the day; in the evening we weigh anchor and head south to Rocky Island.

Rocky Island — a small rocky island at the very south of the route, near the Sudanese border. Walls drop into the deep on all sides, and the currents bring pelagic fish to the reef: schools of trevallies and barracuda, tuna, reef sharks. The soft corals and gorgonians on the walls are among the densest in the Red Sea. Drift dives along the walls, 3–4 dives over the day, including a night dive. We overnight at the neighbouring island of Zabargad.

Zabargad — the largest island in the region, with a mountain at its centre and a sheltered lagoon. In the morning — the wall and coral gardens on the eastern side, where turtles are a common sight. Midday — a small wreck on a sandy slope next to the lagoon, overgrown with corals and home to clouds of glassfish. In the evening — a night dive in the calm lagoon. 3–4 dives. Overnight the yacht begins the passage back towards the coast.

The last day — 2–3 morning dives near the coast. Sha'ab Sataya (Dolphin Reef) — at the very south of Fury Shoals. A large lagoon enclosed by a massive reef. The most beautiful and colorful corals of the route, but the stars of this reef are the huge pods of dolphins that live here. After lunch — the passage to Port Ghalib, rinsing the gear and a farewell dinner on board.

Transfer from Port Ghalib to Hurghada for the return flight home. If you wish, the journey can continue on the northern route — the second week departs the same day.

How much does the dive safari cost in total?

From €1,820 per person in a double lower-deck cabin; main deck €1,920, upper deck €1,970, Royal Suite €2,350. The price covers the cabin, full board, 3–4 dives a day, tanks, weights, dive guides, Nitrox 28 and the tour leader. Extra: local and fuel fees €290, visa €30, airport transfer €25 each way, flights to Hurghada, equipment rental €180.

How do I get there?

Fly to Hurghada — from Moscow it is a direct Aeroflot flight of four and a half hours. From the airport a transfer takes you to Port Ghalib near Marsa Alam, about three hours down the coast. You board on arrival day and the yacht leaves for the first reef in the evening. We help pick flights that fit embarkation.

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Russian citizens get a visa on arrival at Hurghada airport for €30; many other nationalities can use the visa on arrival or an e-visa. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after return.

What level of experience is needed?

Daedalus is an open-sea reef with current and sheer walls, so Advanced level or comparable experience is needed. Fury Shoals is gentler: coral gardens, caves and a shallow lagoon. The first dive of the week is a check dive. If you have not dived for over a year, a refresher course beforehand is the better option.

What should I pack?

Certificate and logbook, your own gear if you have it, a 3 mm wetsuit, a torch for night dives, a surface marker buoy with reel, sunscreen, a hat, light long-sleeved clothing and a windbreaker for the deck. Insurance covering diving is a must. We send a full packing list a month before departure.

How do I book and pay?

Send a request on this page — a manager replies the same day, helps you choose the deck and works out the total with fees and visa. After the request we issue an invoice, a deposit is paid at booking and the balance follows a schedule. Deposit terms are confirmed at booking. Pay by card, bank transfer or invoice.

Can I stay for a second week?

Yes. The northern route with the Thistlegorm, Abu Nuhas, Tiran and Ras Mohammed starts on 1 July — the day this week ends, on the same yacht. Both weeks can be done back to back without going home: 16 days and both Red Seas.

Useful Information

Climate in June
June in the southern Red Sea brings hot, dry weather. Air temperature 33–38°C, water temperature 26–28°C. Underwater visibility 20–40 metres. Calm seas and moderate wind — one of the best seasons for the long crossings to the southern reefs.

Daedalus
A solitary offshore reef roughly 180 km south of the Brother Islands, crowned by a lighthouse. Sheer walls drop away on every side, with a plateau to the south running from 28 to 40 metres. The site is known for reef and hammerhead sharks, as well as large schools of pelagic fish.

Fury Shoals
A reef system in the far south of the Egyptian Red Sea — one of the most pristine diving destinations anywhere: magnificent coral gardens, caverns, caves, and canyons. Sha'ab Sataya, at the southern end of the system, is known as Dolphin Reef for its resident dolphin population.

Two Weeks Back to Back
The northern route departs on July 1, the day this week ends. Both weeks can be combined into a single trip without flying home in between.
