Ramon’s Village sits on Coconut Drive in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye — right on the sand, facing the Belize Barrier Reef. The resort has been running since 1987 and has grown into a garden of royal palms, bougainvillea, lilies and hibiscus, with Mayan sculptures set among the planting.

The cabanas are modelled on the Tahitian cottages of Bora Bora: palm thatch, native timber, built by hand. Some buildings are two storeys with a separate room on each floor. In all there are 61 rooms in thirteen categories, from the compact Jungle Mini to the Presidential Suite, which takes the entire upper level of a two-storey cabana. Across the road is the sister property Steve & Becky’s — ten brightly coloured British Colonial cottages around a courtyard with a gazebo and a fountain.

At the centre of the grounds is a 24-metre lagoon-style pool with the twelve-foot “Rey Ramon” stela, carved by hand from stone blocks the way the Maya did it. Beside it are Pineapples On The Beach, a restaurant on the sand, the Tropic Al’s coffee and smoothie bar, a gift shop and a spa under a palm-thatched palapa between the pool and the sea.

The diving is on site. Ramon’s Village Divers calls itself the oldest dive shop in Belize and has held PADI 5 Star IDC Resort status since 2008. The resort’s own pier runs 120 metres into the sea, with a fleet of fourteen boats from 26 to 46 feet moored along it. The barrier reef begins 400 metres offshore, so thirty to forty named sites are a five to fifteen minute ride away. Between dives the boat comes back to the pier — tanks are swapped there, so you can put together any combination of dives in a day.

Longer trips run to the Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Turneffe Atoll, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and rays gather. Mainland excursions go to Mayan pyramids, cave tubing and zip lines, by boat or by plane from the local airstrip.

A fire in August 2013 destroyed nearly 70 % of the resort. It was rebuilt in 101 days and reopened before the end of that year.

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

Correspondence with the resort, holding the room, the contract, booking confirmation and all paperwork are on our side. There is nothing for you to arrange yourself.

Card payment

We accept payment by card through Stripe and issue an invoice. The transfer to the resort is our job — you do not have to find a way to pay abroad.

Dive prices include the boat, guide, tanks and weights. Marine park fees and equipment rental are extra. Courses run from Discover Scuba to Rescue Diver, with specialities on request. Entry-level courses include materials, equipment and park fees; Advanced Open Water and specialities do not include equipment. The dive centre accepts NAUI, SSI, YMCA and NASDS referrals for completion of entry-level training.

Sea trips leave from the resort's own pier; mainland trips go by boat with a minimum of six people, or by plane from the San Pedro airstrip with a minimum of two. When to go

Getting there

The international airport is Belize City (BZE). American, Delta, Southwest and United fly direct from Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and Newark — from two and a quarter hours out of Miami to five out of Newark. Copa connects through Panama City.

From there it is a local flight to San Pedro (SPR), about fifteen minutes. The return flight costs $185 per person, or $120 from Belize City Municipal (TZA). A water taxi is the alternative.

The resort is a few minutes from the San Pedro airstrip. Passports must be valid for 30 days beyond the date of entry, and Belize’s digital immigration form is filled in before travel.
