Blackbird Caye is an island in Turneffe Atoll, roughly 40 km east of Belize City. Only four atolls exist in the Western Hemisphere and Turneffe is one of them. The resort occupies a stretch of the windward side, set among four thousand acres of mangrove jungle, and the only ways in are by boat or by air.

The scale is deliberately small: 17 cabanas on the beach across four categories, a palapa restaurant, two bars and a pool by the sea. Power comes from the island’s own generators, water from rainwater reservoirs and a reverse-osmosis plant — and it is safe to drink.

The reason to come is the diving. The dive centre is PADI 5 Star, with four boats from the 37-foot Queen Angel to the 50-foot Hot Dive, more than seventy sites around the atoll and twenty of them within 35 minutes. Service is valet: your gear is set up on day one, then washed, dried and loaded for you for the rest of the week.

Three big trips are built into the week package. The first is the Great Blue Hole — the boat leaves Tuesdays at 08:00 and the group is in the water an hour and a half later, dropping to 40 metres among the stalactites, then on to the wall at Half Moon Caye in Lighthouse Reef Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest red-footed booby colony, a barbecue ashore and a third site, The Aquarium. The second is the Witconcrete wreck, a 114-metre concrete ship the resort sank itself on 14 December 2021, a kilometre offshore. The third is The Elbow, a drift dive for pelagics that only runs in calm conditions, paired with the nature trails on Calabash Caye.

Beyond that: snorkelling twice a day, free kayaks and paddleboards, mangroves and an inland lagoon, and more than two dozen species of bird. Saltwater crocodiles live in the lagoon, so swimming there is not advised; the sea side is safe.

The resort sits inside the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enforces a strict no-smoking policy.
