Kri Eco Resort is the first dive resort in Raja Ampat. Max Ammer came here in 1989 and in 1993 opened the place on Kri Island where diving in the whole archipelago began. Most of the famous sites in the area were found from this jetty.

The resort looks out over the deep blue water of the Dampier Strait and distant mountain ranges. Every cottage stands on stilts above the water, built in the traditional Papuan style from locally sourced materials — woven walls, thatched roof, wooden floors, a fan overhead. Three room types, twelve cottages in total: you will not find a quieter resort in Raja Ampat.

Cape Kri is one minute from the jetty. This is the reef where Dr Gerry Allen counted 374 fish species on a single dive — a world record that still stands. Twenty-three more sites lie within half an hour: Sorido Wall and South Kri one to two minutes out, Sardines and Mike’s Point ten, Blue Magic and Lau Lau fifteen, Manta Sandy and the P-47 fighter wreck thirty.

Diving runs to a schedule six days a week: three boat dives a day plus a dusk or night dive on request, at a three-divers-to-one-guide ratio. Saturday is the drying day — no boats until six in the evening, but you can dive off the jetty as much as you like and tanks with air or nitrox are free. Nitrox is free for anyone certified in Enriched Air.

Non-divers are well served too. Kayaks and paddleboards are free for in-house guests, and the snorkelling starts right at the jetty — blue spotted stingrays, turtles, blacktip reef sharks, a big school of jacks. The island jungle holds cuscus, giant coconut crabs and birds of paradise; the red bird of paradise is a thirty-minute hike, Wilson’s takes a boat to Waigeo.

The resort runs on Papuan staff: over thirty years that has given local people an alternative to dynamite fishing and shark finning. The programme returning zebra sharks to Raja Ampat is run from here too.

No markup

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

We run the deal

Correspondence with the resort, holding the room, the contract, booking confirmation and all paperwork are on our side. There is nothing for you to arrange yourself.

Card payment

We accept payment by card through Stripe and issue an invoice. The transfer to the resort is our job — you do not have to find a way to pay abroad.

Support all the way

We help you choose the room and dates, work out the dive package, answer questions about flights and gear, and stay in touch until you are home.

The exact amount is confirmed when we hold your booking: it includes the resort's rate at the day's exchange rate plus the actual transfer costs. No hidden fees.

Boat diving runs six days a week, from Saturday evening to Friday afternoon. The usual day is two dives in the morning, one in the afternoon and a sunset or night dive on request. Saturday is set aside for drying gear and for Sunday departures: boats, crew and guides are off until 18:00, but you can dive and snorkel off the jetty as much as you like and tanks with air or nitrox are free. Night boat diving reopens at 18:00 on Saturday. Dive insurance is mandatory — the resort is a DAN World ambassador and short-term cover can be bought on arrival. Blackwater diving is offered only at the neighbouring Sorido Bay Resort, not at Kri.

Beyond diving

Snorkelling off the jetty and by boat
Free kayaks and paddleboards for guests
Jungle trekking on the island
Birds of paradise watching
Spa and massage
Manta trips and the Fam Islands
Hidden Bay, the Passage and the Mushroom Islands
Kali Biru blue river on Waigeo
Batanta waterfall

Off the jetty you can see blue spotted stingrays, turtles, crocodile fish, blacktip reef sharks, batfish, a huge school of jacks and sometimes bumphead parrotfish. The walk to the red bird of paradise is a thirty-minute climb, free from the resort's side — each participant pays a €23 donation to the local guide and village, and it is the only programme that runs on Saturdays. Wilson's bird of paradise takes a separate half-day trip to Waigeo. The island jungle holds common spotted cuscus, giant coconut crabs, leaf insects, cockatoos, parrots, lorikeets, kingfishers and kookaburras, and occasionally a tree kangaroo.

When to go

Best time
Year-round; prime season October to April
Water temperature
a steady 28–29 °C

The Dampier Strait dives all year: there is no pronounced dry or rainy season, and the islands and mountains around create a local microclimate of high humidity and short tropical showers. October to April is considered prime, when plankton concentrations bring in the big pelagics. The summer months are windier and the surface gets choppy, but that does not reach the diving — visibility then is usually the best of the year. Arrivals and departures are on Sundays and Wednesdays; there are no transfers on Saturdays.

Getting there

Kri Island lies 75 km from the port of Sorong on the northwest coast of West Papua. The usual route is an international flight to Jakarta, Denpasar or Manado, then a domestic flight to Sorong (SOQ), Domine Edward Osok airport, and the resort boat from there.

The boat leaves Sorong around 09:30, so do not arrive later than 08:30. On the way back it reaches Sorong around 09:00 — book your onward flight no earlier than 10:30. Scheduled arrivals and departures run on Sundays and Wednesdays; there are no transfers at all on Saturdays.

For stays of seven nights and more the boat is free. For shorter stays and other days it costs €95 per person each way; a private charter is €1,000 each way for a group of up to nine. There is a third route as well — the public ferry via Waisai at €120 per person each way, including transfers and tickets.

Raja Ampat runs on Eastern Indonesian Time, GMT+9. A visa on arrival costs USD 35 and your passport must be valid for at least six months. An electronic customs declaration is mandatory and can be filed no earlier than three days before arrival.
