Kokomo occupies the whole of Yaukuve Island in the northern part of the Kadavu group. Guests arrive on the resort’s own seaplane or helicopter from Nadi — forty-five to sixty minutes in the air, and there is no other way onto the island.

Twenty minutes from the shore lies the Great Astrolabe Reef. The resort calls it the fourth largest reef in the world and puts its length at over a hundred kilometres. Together with Solo Reef it gives more than thirty sites for diving and snorkelling: the caverns of Grotto, the coral bommies and anemonefish of Wonderland, the slopes of Side Street, the walls of Corner and Rainbows End. A separate site is the manta cleaning station, where reef mantas come as if to a day spa.

Diving runs from four boats — Atlantis, Tabua, Explorer and Nautilus, seating eight to twelve divers each. Departures are at 9:00 and 15:00, with no more than three dives a day; night dives are done on the house reef straight off West Beach. All the gear is on the island, including short and long wetsuits.

There are two kinds of accommodation. Twenty-one beachfront villas run from one bedroom for two to three bedrooms for six, each with its own infinity pool, tropical garden, beach access and artwork by Chris Kenyon. Five residences stand along the hilltop and are built for large families and groups: from three bedrooms at Namara to six at Sunset, which sleeps twelve. A residence comes with its own butler, nanny and buggy.

Dining is in three restaurants: Beach Shack with Fijian interiors and ocean views, Walker D’Plank over the water beyond the jetty serving Asian street food, and Kokocabana in blue and white with woodfired pizza and a Mediterranean menu. The resort’s own farm of more than two hectares covers over 80% of the herbs and greens, and seafood is bought dock-to-dish from local fishermen.

Kokomo runs a manta research project with Manta Project Fiji and The Manta Trust: 298 sightings last season, a population of more than a hundred animals, ninety of them logged in the database. Since 2018 a coral restoration project has been running — six nurseries in three styles and more than two thousand transplanted colonies.

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

PADI courses from Bubblemaker to Rescue Diver

The dive centre is on the island. No experience is needed: the two-hour Discover Scuba is open from age ten, the full Open Water takes four days and the theory is best done online before arrival. Children can dive in the pool on the Bubblemaker programme from eight and on the house reef from ten. Gear is available on site, including short and long wetsuits and fins. Experienced divers are offered Solo Reef, with strong currents and deep walls. Kokomo holds a medical and evacuation insurance policy for students diving under its own instructors, but advises personal cover as well: there is currently no working recompression chamber in Fiji. The resort recommends waiting 12 hours after a single tank dive and 18 after two or more before flying.

The kitchen is led by executive chef Marty Kindleysides and the resort calls its philosophy Harbour to Harvest. The farm covers more than two hectares and supplies over 80% of the herbs and greens; fish and seafood are bought dock-to-dish straight from the fishermen. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of the stay and ordered à la carte, including delivery to the villa or residence.

Non-motorised watersports are part of the stay. Surf trips run on the Mako vessel: up to four surfers and a guide, four hours with a packed lunch; the nearest break, Naiqoro Passage, is forty-five minutes away, Vesi an hour, Soso ninety minutes. There is no shade or bathroom on board. Fishing runs from May to September, when the water is 23–26 °C. The Kaji Kids Club and the Teens Club are open from 9am to 9pm.

These are the only prices published on the resort's site. Accommodation rates are not published: the site states only that rates are quoted per villa or residence, per night in USD and exclusive of government taxes. The shared air transfer is included for residences on the basis of two guests per bedroom; for villas it is charged separately. The final shared departure of the day is at 16:00, with check-in closing 30 minutes before.

The resort calls Fiji a year-round dive destination: there is something to see on the Great Astrolabe and Solo Reefs any day of the year. The water is coolest from July to October at around 24 °C, and that is when visibility is at its best — up to thirty metres. In summer, December to February, the water warms to 30 °C. Mantas are most likely between April and October. Fishing runs from May to September, when the water is 23–26 °C.

Getting there

Kokomo occupies the whole of Yaukuve Island in the northern part of the Kadavu group. The only way in is by air, and only on the resort’s own aircraft.

Fly into Nadi International Airport. From there it is the resort’s own Twin Otter seaplane or AS350 helicopter, 45–60 minutes over the Pacific. At the airport guests are met by priority facilitation and taken to the Kokomo hangar.

The shared air transfer runs to a schedule: the final departure of the day is at 16:00, with check-in closing half an hour before. For same-day connections the inbound flight must land in Nadi before 15:00 and the outbound leave after midday. Baggage allowance is 20 kg checked and 5 kg carry-on.

For those who would rather not depend on the schedule, the resort will put on a private aircraft: helicopter from US$ 5,000 and seaplane from US$ 7,500 one way.
