Beqa is an island thirty kilometres south of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island. It is small — ten square miles — and it has neither roads nor towns: a few villages sit around the perimeter, and between them there is rainforest and a rim of sandy beach. The only way in is by water.

The resort occupies ten acres of gardens and rainforest on the shore. A koi pond lies among the bures, paths run through coconut palms and flowering shrubs, an infinity pool sits on the beach, and everyone eats together in the open-air bure kalou — a big thatched house looking out over the lagoon. There are twenty-five bures in four categories; the beachfront ones have their own courtyard with a plunge pool, a hammock and a sundeck.

Diving is the reason to come. The resort is ringed by the Great Beqa Reef: three hundred kilometres of coral barrier, one of the largest in the world. The lagoon holds more than thirty sites — soft-coral pinnacles, walls, passages and swim-throughs, a couple of small wrecks. The soft-coral sites run from Circus Circus to Legasea; everything else around the lagoon is hard coral, and the Blue Wall and Flat Head sites outside the fringing reef depend on the south-easterly.

Then there is the Cathedral — a shark dive at twenty-one metres where at least nine species turn up: bull, tiger, silvertip, tawny nurse, blacktip reef, whitetip reef, grey reef and lemon sharks. It runs Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and is open to resort guests only. The second shark site, Apex Arena, is shallow — sixteen metres, single tank, no feed — inside the resort’s second marine protected area.

The house reef is a protected area, and shore diving and snorkelling on it are unlimited. Straight off the beach you can find octopus, garden eels, orangutan crabs and rays.

Beyond the water there is the island: the climb to the waterfall where the firewalking legend began, a kayak through the mangrove forest to the far side, a sandbar that surfaces for a few hours a day and then disappears again. Evenings bring meke, kava, the village choir and the Bula Band at the bar.

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

The Cathedral shark dive runs Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and is available to resort guests only. One shark dive day may be included with a package of five nights or more; on a shorter stay it can only be requested, subject to availability. Extra shark dives depend on conditions. Sites are picked daily by wind and current: the soft-coral sites run from Circus Circus to Legasea, everything else around the lagoon is hard coral, and the Blue Wall and Flat Head sites outside the fringing reef cannot be dived when the south-easterly is blowing. Guests sign an Indemnity Release before diving; the resort recommends DiveAssure or DAN insurance.

Meals are served in the open-air bure kalou on the lagoon — you are called to the table by the lali, a wooden drum. There is no a la carte; everything runs on the meal package. You need no cash during your stay: everything is billed to your room and settled at departure in Fijian or US dollars, by Visa, Mastercard or American Express, or by traveller's cheque. Card payments carry a 4% fee.

Family Fun Explorer week once a year

Women visiting the village need shoulders and knees covered: a t-shirt and a sulu (sarong) or a skirt. Sulus are sold in the boutique. All outings are booked at the front desk on arrival or by email beforehand — they depend on the boat, the tide and the weather.

These bures are nestled around the koi pond, some reached by a small bridge. Each has a veranda. Inside they match the rest — rain-tree wood furniture, local carvings, tiled floor, large walk-in shower, air conditioning and fans. The beach is a few steps away through the garden.

Three bures, numbers 17 to 19, tucked away in the tropical greenery, each with a veranda. The fit-out matches the other categories — the difference is a garden outlook instead of the ocean. Together with Koi Pond, this is the resort's most affordable category.

Four suites, numbers 13 to 16, at a thousand square feet across two bedrooms. The master has a king bed, the second two doubles. There is a dining and sitting area and a bathroom with the toilet separate from the shower and double sinks. Upstairs units have a private balcony, downstairs a veranda — both looking onto the grounds and the ocean. This is the family option: while the parents dive, child care is free.

The boat leaves Pacific Harbour for Beqa at 11:00 and 16:30 and returns from Beqa at 10:00; a 14:30 departure can be requested subject to availability. The crossing takes 45 minutes, boats do not run after dark, and transfers must be booked at least 48 hours ahead. Check-in from 12:00, check-out 9:30.

Fiji is a year-round destination, but the seasons show. April to October is drier and clearer — the time for photography and reef exploration. November to March brings warmer water, soft coral blooms and occasional brief showers; the rain usually falls at night unless a weather system is close. Shark and reef diving run all year. Mosquitoes appear at dusk and dawn, and the resort provides deterrents in the bures and around the dining area.

Getting there

There are direct flights to Nadi (NAN) from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Sydney, Dallas and Vancouver. From the airport it is about a three-hour drive along the Coral Coast to the Pearl Resort Marina at Pacific Harbour, or roughly two hours from Suva. Then 45 minutes by boat to the island.

The boat leaves Pacific Harbour at 11:00 and 16:30 and returns from Beqa at 10:00; a 14:30 departure can be requested subject to availability. Boats do not cross after dark. Transfers must be booked at least 48 hours ahead and both ground and boat legs confirmed before arrival. A charter crossing outside the schedule costs an extra USD 200 per boat.

Everyone needs a passport, valid for six months beyond the return date. Citizens of the United States, Canada and most of Western Europe get a visa on arrival; everyone else should check in advance.

The currency is the Fijian dollar, roughly 1.7 to the US dollar. You need no cash at the resort: everything is billed to your room and settled at departure in cash, by card or by traveller’s cheque, with a 4% fee on cards. Power is 240V on Australian three-pin sockets — buy an adaptor before you travel or at the airport.

A booking is only confirmed once the resort confirms it in writing. The deposit is USD 150 per person within 14 days of confirmation; booking inside 60 days means paying in full. The balance is due 60 days before arrival. The resort does not accept cancellations: paid portions are non-refundable and non-transferable, so travel insurance is strongly advised. A group means ten adults or more.
