The resort sits on a point wrapped by Savusavu Bay on Fiji’s northern island of Vanua Levu. It was the country’s first eco-luxury resort, named after Jean-Michel Cousteau and still doing his work: marine education, reef protection and a stay built around iTaukei tradition.

Guests live in bures — traditional Fijian cottages with soaring temple ceilings, vesi hardwood floors and louvred shutters that catch the trade wind. Eight categories, from 42 m² garden and oceanfront bures to two-bedroom bures, split-level cottages on Point Reef and a 104 m² villa with an infinity pool and Jacuzzi. Every bure has its own deck, most of them a double hammock.

Diving is run by L’Aventure Jean-Michel Cousteau Diving. The headline site is the Namena Marine Reserve, one of the finest anywhere: thirty to forty minutes by boat, dense coral, big fish, hawksbill turtles and seasonal whale migrations. Closer in are Dreamhouse with its barracuda and grey reef sharks, Dreadlocks with soft corals, the shallow Golden Nugget five minutes from the beach, Lighthouse on the outer barrier reef and Shark Alley. Walls drop off sheer, and submerged pinnacles 100–200 m across top out at 13 metres.

The resort is built so that almost everything is already in the rate: three meals a day, soft drinks, daily laundry, boat snorkelling with marine biologists, morning and evening yoga, evening entertainment and up to four off-site excursions a week. Its pride is the children’s programme — nannies for under-fives, a Fijian buddy for older kids and a teen club, all at no extra charge.

Culture comes as a kava ceremony in Nukubalavu village, palm weaving, a medicinal plant walk with a village elder, storytelling by the fire and a lovo feast from the earth oven. Nature comes as mangrove planting, a reef flat walk at low tide, a hike to the waterfalls and the resort’s own island, Naviavia, a few minutes offshore.

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

Correspondence with the resort, holding the room, the contract, booking confirmation and all paperwork are on our side. There is nothing for you to arrange yourself.

Card payment

We accept payment by card through Stripe and issue an invoice. The transfer to the resort is our job — you do not have to find a way to pay abroad.

The dive centre also takes guests from other hotels

The daily schedule: two-tank trips at 8:30 and 11:00, back by 12:30; Namena trips leave at 7:30 and return by 12:30, or at 8:30 with lunch aboard and back around 14:00. An afternoon trip goes at 13:30 and night dives run at sunset. Depths are matched to certification: pinnacle tops sit at 13 metres and the edges slope from 18 to 24. Certification takes two and a half days if the theory is done online beforehand. The resort publishes no dive prices — they are quoted at booking.

When to go

Best time: Year-round

The resort and the diving run all year. Whale migrations pass through the Namena reserve seasonally — the resort publishes no dates and suggests asking the dive team. Practical notes: bring repellent, and there is no doctor on site, though one is called in when needed.

Getting there

Fly internationally into Nadi (NAN). A resort representative meets guests in the arrivals area and walks them to the domestic terminal, five minutes away. From there it is about an hour to Savusavu (SVU) on Fiji Link, or by charter with Pacific Island Air or Island Hoppers.

At Nadi guests are given a Cibi necklace so the driver can spot them in Savusavu. The drive from the airport to the resort takes 15–20 minutes and is included in the stay.

There is a backup route: fly Nadi to Labasa (LBS), 45 minutes, then a scenic 90-minute drive — that transfer is charged and paid to the resort directly.

Rough flight times to Fiji: Los Angeles and San Francisco about 11 hours, Honolulu 6.5, Sydney 4, Auckland 3, Singapore 10.5, Tokyo 9.

On site everything goes on the bure account; cash is only useful for village and town trips. Power is 240 V with Australian plugs.
