Thailand Master is a traditional Indonesian phinisi schooner built in 2007 and still widely known by her former name, The Phinisi (Cheng I Sao). An ironwood hull, two masts carrying rust-red sails and 34 metres of length make her a rare sight among the fibreglass catamarans of the Andaman Sea. Yet she was designed by divers for divers: the whole aft deck is given over to dive gear.
Eighteen guests share seven cabins on the lower deck. Every cabin has its own bathroom with hot water and individually controlled air conditioning. The interior is dark timber and brass, with portholes instead of windows.
The social spaces are spread across two decks: an air-conditioned saloon with a television, an audio and video library and a marine-life reference shelf, a covered open-air dining area aft, and a sundeck with loungers and bean bags. The dive deck is shaded, each diver gets a personal station with a tank rack and a storage box, and there is a separate camera table with charging points and a dedicated rinse tank for underwater cameras. Diving is run from two motor tenders, which lets the boat work current-swept pinnacles without moving the ship.
The itineraries cover the full range of the Andaman Sea: the Similans, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock in the north, Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, Koh Haa and Phi Phi in the south, and from December to March the vessel crosses into Myanmar for the Mergui Archipelago and the Burma Banks — Black Rock and Western Rocky. The galley serves Thai and Western food buffet style, with vegetarian options on request.
Worth knowing in advance: there is no Wi-Fi on board at all, nitrox and gear rental are both charged extra, and marine park fees are paid in cash on board on top of the trip price.

Nitrox is charged: USD 35 per diving day, or as a package — USD 105 for 4 nights, 175 for 6, 210 for 7, 245 for 8 and 315 for 10 nights. Gear rental is also charged: a full set runs from USD 90 for 4 nights to USD 270 for 10; individual items from USD 15. Upgrading to a 13 litre (100 cuft) cylinder costs from USD 42. Book rental gear in advance so the right sizes are on board. Mergui itineraries require an Advanced Open Water certification, at least 30 logged dives and experience in currents; Thailand itineraries require a minimum of 10 logged dives. The crew speaks English.

Similan & Surin Islands
The Andaman Sea classic, over 4 or 6 nights. Granite boulders and swim-throughs in the Similans, pelagic action at Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, the soft corals of Richelieu Rock and the hard-coral gardens of the Surin Islands — the richest hard-coral diversity in Thailand. Ashore, there are Similan beaches and a Moken sea-gypsy village. The six-night version allows up to 19 dives, the four-night up to 14. Open Water and 10 logged dives are enough.

The vessel's flagship route: north and south Andaman Sea in a single voyage of 8 or 10 nights, around 26 dives. The Similans, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock — plus the deep-water pinnacles of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, where mantas and whale sharks turn up, the caverns and lagoons of Koh Haa, and the Phi Phi classics: the Bida islands, Shark Point, the King Cruiser wreck and Koh Doc Mai. Ten-night departures push further south to Koh Lipe in Tarutao Marine Park. Advanced Open Water is recommended; 10 logged dives and experience in currents are mandatory.

A short four-night run out of Chalong in May and June, when the Similan season has closed and the southern Andaman Sea stands empty. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are two isolated pinnacles with near-permanent good visibility, mantas and whale sharks; then the caverns and lagoons of Koh Haa, the Bida islands and Shark Point off Phi Phi, the sunken King Cruiser ferry and Koh Doc Mai with its leopard sharks. Around 14 dives over 4 days.

The vessel's most remote route — 7 or 10 nights from Ranong into the northern Andaman Sea. Thai exit formalities, a crossing to Kawthaung, and then almost uninhabited islands and seamounts: Black Rock with its grey reef sharks and mantas, High Rock, Tower Rock, the Torres Islands and the Burma Banks. Currents can be strong and visibility variable because of nutrient-rich upwelling, so the route is for experienced divers: Advanced Open Water and at least 30 logged dives are mandatory, and a nitrox certification is strongly recommended. The last full day usually brings two morning dives and a beach stop at Horseshoe Island. The Myanmar visa and archipelago entrance fees are paid separately.
