Blue Dolphin is a 27.5-metre liveaboard built in 2017 and completely refitted in 2022. She belongs to Big Blue Diving, a dive centre based in Khao Lak that has been working the Similans since 2003 — so the people on board are the operator’s own guides, not a hired crew.
There are only 16 guests in seven cabins against five to seven dive staff, which keeps groups down to four divers per guide. The standard trip is 4 nights and 14 dives; twice a season the boat runs a longer five-night trip with 18 dives.
There is a single itinerary, and it happens to be the best in Thailand: the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Surin and Richelieu Rock. Departure is from Tap Lamu pier in Khao Lak at around 21:00 after the briefing and dinner, with the return on day four by 16:00. Transfers from your hotel or the airport are included in the price.
The dive deck is roomy: tanks with both yoke and DIN valves, an on-board EANx system, a dedicated camera table with a charging station and a separate rinse tank for camera gear. The boat takes rebreathers and sidemount — there is both space to set up and guides who know the configuration. Diving is done from two inflatable dinghies; nobody swims back to the boat, the dinghy collects the group right where it surfaces.
Four cabin categories. The two Upper Deck Master cabins sit on the top deck with a panoramic window, en-suite bathroom with hot shower, fridge, desk and safe. The operator puts the other five cabins on the main deck: the two Deluxe are also en-suite, while the two Standard cabins and the four-berth Quad have no bathroom of their own and use four shared showers one level down on the lower deck — worth knowing in advance, because it is precisely a berth in the Quad that sets the headline price.
Two things to budget for. Nitrox is available on board but charged separately — 2800 ฿ per trip. Personal dive accident insurance is mandatory in Thailand: either your own policy or a temporary one from the operator for 300–1900 ฿. On top of that comes the national park fee of 2300 ฿ per diver.
Certification level: Open Water divers are accepted but limited to 18 m, and Koh Bon and Koh Tachai are more interesting deeper — Advanced opens up 30 m. Before the trip the operator checks your certification card, logbook, medical statement and insurance.

Diving on board
Nitrox is available to certified divers for 2800 ฿ per trip; the SSI Nitrox course can be taken on board. A night dive is scheduled on day one on request, after that the boat runs sunset dives. The crew speaks English, German, Thai and Japanese. Open Water divers are limited to 18 m, Advanced to 30 m; certification card, logbook, medical statement and insurance are checked before the trip.
Food and drinks
The menu changes every day and there are two cooks on board. Let the operator know about any dietary requirements when booking. Alcohol is charged separately.

The four-berth cabin on the main deck is the most affordable option on the boat and the one that sets the headline price. Every berth has its own storage nook, shelf, reading light and safe. There is no bathroom in the cabin: four shared showers are one level down on the lower deck. A good fit for groups of friends and for solo travellers on a budget.

Similans, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Surin and Richelieu
The boat's only itinerary, and the definitive run of Thai dive sites. Boarding at Tap Lamu pier at 19:00, casting off around 21:00 after the briefing and dinner, then an overnight crossing to the Similans. Day one covers Hideaway Bay and the Tuna Wreck, West of Eden, Three Trees or Breakfast Bend, with an afternoon beach landing and the climb to the viewpoint on Island 8, and Aow Khon Gair in the evening. Day two takes in Christmas Point at the northern end of the Similans, the reef at Koh Bon, then the Koh Tachai pinnacle twice — once at sunset, when the current brings food in and the pelagics start hunting just before the light goes. Day three belongs entirely to Surin and Richelieu Rock, a limestone pinnacle out in open water that draws whale sharks and ranks among the best macro photography sites in Asia; three dives back to back on the same site. Day four returns to Koh Bon, the most reliable spot for mantas, and the local wrecks, with arrival back at Tap Lamu by 16:00. Fourteen dives in total. The headline price is a berth in the four-person cabin with shared showers; an en-suite cabin costs noticeably more. The season runs from 15 October to early May — outside that window the national parks are closed. Mantas turn up most often between February and April.

1 departureSimilans and Richelieu with the sea turtle programme
The same itinerary and the same 14 dives, but the trip sails alongside researchers from Andaman Turtle Watch. Divers help collect data: photographing turtles at Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and around the Similans, identifying them by the pattern of scales on the face — unique to each animal, like a fingerprint — and the images go into the Andaman Sea sightings database. Evenings bring talks on sea turtle biology and on what is happening to them in this area. The price is the same as a regular departure and so is the number of berths. A good option if you want four days underwater to leave behind something more than photographs.
