Deep Andaman Queen is a 30-metre Thai liveaboard based in Phuket, built in 2008 and completely rebuilt in 2019. She has been working the Andaman Sea for over twenty years and remains one of the few vessels in the region that runs not only to the Similans but further north as well — into Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago.
Ten cabins take up to 23 guests. The lower deck holds the budget Andaman cabins: a quad, a triple and a twin with bunk beds and portholes. The main deck has cabins with windows on the hull side: two Twin Ocean Front, three Deluxe Ocean Front with a queen-size bed and two master cabins forward with a king-size bed, a TV and a minibar. Every cabin has its own bathroom, individually controlled air conditioning, a hair dryer, charging sockets and fresh towels.
The vessel’s pride is the dive platform aft — one of the largest in Southeast Asia: a two-level kitting-up area, a separate entry and exit platform, two ladders, two freshwater showers and two rinse tubs for cameras, computers and torches. Total deck area is 190 m². The saloon is air conditioned, with sofas, a library, a screen and a camera station; dining is al fresco on the upper deck, where there is also a large sun deck with loungers. Food is Thai and Western, served buffet style, with barbecues on deck in the evenings.
Nitrox is available on board but is charged separately — THB 350 per tank. Similan and Surin national marine park fees and Myanmar permits are not included in the fare and are paid on top. Open Water divers are asked to upgrade to Advanced Open Water on board or to take a private guide — currents on these routes can be strong.

Diving on board
Open Water divers are asked to upgrade to Advanced Open Water on board (THB 10,000) or to pay for a private guide for the whole trip — currents around the Similans and in Myanmar can be strong. If you have not dived for over a year or have fewer than 20 dives logged, a refresher is recommended. Cameras are allowed on dives once you have 40 logged dives. Gear can be rented on board and is paid in cash on the boat: full set THB 700 a day, dive computer THB 500, 15 l tank THB 400.

Similans, Surin and Richelieu Rock
The classic Andaman route out of Thap Lamu near Khao Lak: the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock and Surin, with the Boonsung wreck on the way back. Up to four dives a day, including a night dive in Honeymoon Bay off Island No. 4. Granite pinnacles, coral gardens and soft corals; at Richelieu Rock whale sharks and mantas are most often seen from February to April. Suitable for beginners and experienced divers alike. Trips run from 3 to 6 nights; some depart from Ranong after a Myanmar leg and finish in Thap Lamu.

Nine nights and 28 dives — the longest trip the boat runs. The first three days cover Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Surin and Richelieu Rock, then it is across to Kawthaung, Thai and Burmese immigration and an overnight crossing north. Six days follow in the Mergui Archipelago: Shark Cave, Submarine, Square Rock, Black Rock, North and South Twin, the Burma Banks, Sea Fan Forest, Western Rocky and Northern Rocky. It closes with snorkelling at Cockscomb Island and a beach stop at Horseshoe Island, finishing in Ranong. These sites are rarely visited and currents can be strong — a route for confident divers.

Six nights and 19 dives covering the Myanmar part only, out of Ranong and back. The Mergui Archipelago only opened to divers in the late 1990s and most of its sites still see very few visitors. The programme takes in Black Rock with its mantas and grey reef sharks, Western Rocky with its long swim-through tunnel, Shark Cave, North and South Twin and the remote Burma Banks. Plenty of big pelagics and excellent macro. Separate Myanmar permits and immigration fees apply.
