TL

Siddhartha sits on the northeast coast of Bali, in the village of Kubu in the Karangasem regency — a part of the island that still lives a village life, with the sacred volcano Mount Agung rising behind the shore. The resort covers 2.4 hectares and more than 180 metres of oceanfront, and holds just 32 buildings — 30 freestanding bungalows and two villas with their own pool. They were laid out to keep as many of the old trees as possible: some of them grow right inside the open-air bathrooms.

The resort opened in 2009, built by Stefan Brand and Barbara Ebel, a German-Swiss couple who had spent three decades in the diving industry across Asia and the Maldives. Of the 115 staff, 80 % come from the surrounding villages.

Siddhartha Dive Center is on the grounds, fifty metres from the water: 30 complete rental sets, two Coltri compressors, a membrane nitrox system, the boat Baba for ten guests and several minibuses. The open-air deck above the ocean serves both as the gathering point before and after a dive and as the classroom for SSI courses.

The house reef is Kubu Marine Park, a protected zone directly in front of the resort. It runs for 350 metres with several shore entry points, and the staff carry your gear to whichever entry you choose and collect it afterwards. The artificial reef project started in 2011: structures 70 to 80 metres long at 14 metres depth are now fully overgrown with coral. Turtles, trumpetfish, batfish, snappers, schools of trevallies and fusiliers; in the sand — nudibranchs, leaf fish, pipefish, lionfish and stingrays.

The Boga is a 50-metre vessel sunk in September 2012 specifically for diving. She lies at 16 to 35 metres and is reachable straight from the house reef: outside, the steering wheel and an intact propeller; inside, for experienced divers, a jeep, Buddha statues and old tanks.

The Liberty — the famous USAT Liberty at Tulamben — is five minutes away by car or boat. Torpedoed in 1942 and beached, she was shaken off the sand by the 1963 eruption of Agung and now rests on the slope between 5 and 30 metres. Early-morning and night dives on the Liberty are a story of their own.

Beyond that: the black volcanic sand of Tulamben and Seraya, where underwater photographers come from all over the world for harlequin shrimp, rhinopias, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses; Amed with its reefs and a sunken Japanese patrol boat; Padangbai with the macro treasures under the jetty pilings; and Nusa Penida, where reef mantas hold station all year and mola mola arrive between July and October.

Ashore there is an open-air restaurant, a pool at the water’s edge with a bar, the Six Elements spa with its lava-stone grotto, a yoga studio fifty metres from the shoreline with free daily classes, a gym, a game room and a boutique of local crafts.

When to go

Best time

Mola mola at Nusa Penida from July to October, reef mantas year-round

The resort is open all year and does not describe a diving season. The only seasonal marker on the site is the mola mola: they show up at Nusa Penida when the water turns colder, from July to October, at Crystal Bay and Blue Corner. Reef mantas hold station at Manta Point and Manta Bay all year. The beach in front of the resort is shingle and rock, as it is everywhere along the north and northeast of Bali.

Getting there

The resort stands on the Amlapura–Singaraja road in the village of Kubu, Karangasem regency, on the northeast coast of Bali. Tulamben with the famous Liberty wreck is five minutes away, Amed about 45 minutes, and Nusa Penida an hour and a half to two hours: by car to Padangbai and then 45 minutes by speedboat.

The resort publishes neither the distance to the airport nor the driving time. Reception arranges the airport transfer and any other transport for a fee, with at least 24 hours’ notice; the seven-night package already includes a return transfer.

Arrival is possible on any day of the week, checkout is at 12:00. Reception is open 7:00 to 23:00. Sockets are type C and F, 220 V, and adaptors are available at reception. Power cuts do happen in Bali — every room has candles, matches and a torch. Visa, Mastercard and rupiah in cash are accepted.

The resort is built to follow the terrain: there are many steps, uneven paths and changes in level, and it states openly that it does not meet international accessibility standards — the restaurant, the pool and some of the bungalows may be difficult for guests with limited mobility.
