TL

Lotus Metita Island stands on the small coral island of Metita off the southern tip of Morotai — the northernmost of the Maluku islands, three hours by air from Jakarta to Ternate and another forty-five minutes to Morotai. The whole resort is six wooden cottages on white sand under coconut palms, an open-air restaurant, a three-level saltwater pool and a dive centre. The island is sand from end to end and guests walk barefoot. It is the smallest and most remote property of the Lotus Journey group; until 2026 it was called Metita Beach & Dive Resort.

The house reef starts at the beach and runs as a coral plateau out to the drop-off: turtles, bumphead parrotfish, Napoleon wrasse and blacktip reef sharks right by the shore, and two minutes away by boat, on the outer edge of the reef, sharks patrol the current at eighteen metres. Around Morotai the dive centre has opened about seventy sites and describes thirty of them on its website: walls and the Womouw seamount off the southern tip, the corals of Dodola, Galo-Galo where mobulas are met, a WWII graveyard — two Australian Bristol Beaufort bombers, trucks and jeeps at 35–50 metres for divers with a deep certification, and the fishing vessel Susi sunk in 2019 within recreational depths. At night, divers search the sand for the Halmahera walking shark — a species described only in 2013. In the group’s own words, the place deserves help discovering and naming new sites.

The Lotus Divers centre is the first and only PADI 5-Star centre in the Morotai and Halmahera area, and a Green Fins member. Two fibreglass boats for 12 and 6 divers, each with two four-stroke 100 hp Yamaha engines, a toilet, a sun canopy, DAN oxygen and a first-aid kit; two smaller boats for private outings. Two compressors, a nitrox membrane, Mares rental gear and Suunto computers, an air-conditioned camera room with eight workstations and an air gun for drying housings, and a lockable wet room for equipment. PADI courses are taught in English, Indonesian, French and German.

Two cottage types: the Beach Cottage, 55–59 m² for two with a king bed or two singles, floor-to-ceiling windows and a veranda with a hammock right on the shore, and the Garden Family Cottage, 103 m² — two bedrooms for four in the shade of the garden. Each has air conditioning and a ceiling fan, an open-air bathroom with a hot shower, a mini bar, a safe, a kettle with local tea and coffee, and Starlink Wi-Fi.

The resort does not publish nightly rates. In the group’s price list for the 2026–27 season an extra night in a garden-view cottage costs 210 $ per person at double occupancy on full board, a beach-view cottage 237 $, and the “Morotai and Manado” combination — five nights here and five at Lotus Gangga Island — starts from 2,327 $ without diving and from 3,041 $ with twelve dives. The group’s liveaboard vessels Lotus Malaillo and Lotus Malayeka also call here on their North Halmahera itineraries.

Tips are shared equally among the whole team.

When to Go

Best time

April to November — calm seas and the best visibility

diving is possible all year round

Water temperature
29–30 °C year-round
Air temperature
27–32 °C

From December to March the seasonal wind raises the swell and reduces visibility — trips to distant sites in these months are best planned with the dive centre. The water is warm all year; a rash guard or a 3 mm suit is enough. The sun is equatorial — the resort asks guests to use reef-safe mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide. Returning guests of any Lotus Journey resort or vessel receive a 10 % discount on accommodation and diving.

Getting There

The gateway to the region is Ternate (TTE): 3 hours 45 minutes from Jakarta, 1 hour 15 minutes from Manado, with flights from Makassar as well. From there, two routes.

By air to Morotai. Wings Air flies Ternate — Morotai (OTI) on Monday and Thursday mornings at 8:50, returning at 10:00. From the overnight flight out of Jakarta or Makassar a same-day connection works; from Manado a same-day connection is possible only on Thursdays, and for the Monday flight you need to overnight in Ternate. The resort meets you at Morotai airport — about an hour by car and boat.

Overland and by sea. If the schedules do not line up, the resort drives you from Ternate: 30 minutes to the port, 30 minutes by speedboat to Sofifi on Halmahera, four hours by car across the island to Tobelo and an hour by boat to Metita — about six hours in all. To make it in one day, you need to land in Ternate before noon: the last boat from Tobelo leaves at 17:30.

The resort’s coordinates are 1.964880, 128.230406. Passports must be valid for at least six months; many nationalities can obtain an electronic visa on arrival. Voltage is 220–240 V, transformers are available.
