TL

Komodo Resort sits on the private island of Sebayur Besar, right on the boundary of Komodo National Park and about 18 km from Labuan Bajo. The resort occupies a secluded white-sand bay; its 31 bungalows are built from local teak, and nobody but resort guests lives on the island.

The dive centre, Neptune Scuba Diving Komodo, is a PADI 5 Star operation running 13 boats — traditional wooden vessels with VHF, GPS, first aid, emergency oxygen, dry storage for cameras and a sundeck with bean bags. In the water the ratio is no more than four divers per guide.

More than 30 dive sites lie 10 to 60 minutes away. Batu Bolong is a wall under dense coral cover, 5–40 m, for experienced divers. Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are current-swept seamounts with schooling grey reef sharks. At Manta Point mantas gather at a cleaning station in only 8–20 m. Beyond those: Shotgun, Siaba Besar, Tatawa Besar, Mawan, Manta Alley, Pink Beach. The park covers over 1,700 km², has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The house reef runs for roughly a kilometre along the shore in front of the resort and is open for snorkelling at any hour. Entry is by the jetty ladder only — guests are asked not to walk in from the beach, to spare the shallow corals. Turtles, reef sharks, pristine hard and soft corals; Discover Scuba Diving happens here too.

Getting there. Fly to Labuan Bajo from Jakarta or Bali, then take the resort’s free shuttle boat — about 1 hour 40 minutes. It leaves Labuan Bajo at 12:45 PM and the resort at 8:30 AM. A private speedboat is available for a fee, but boats may not sail after dark.

For non-divers there is a new free-form pool on the sand between the restaurant and the beach bar, the Sebayur Spa, a fifteen-minute climb to the island’s peak for sunrise and sunset, and trips into the park: dragon trekking with rangers on Komodo and Rinca, the Padar hike, Pink Beach and the flying foxes of Kalong Island.

Seven room categories, from natural-bamboo bungalows set apart from the main resort to the new hilltop Panorama View rooms with a 180° outlook.
