CoCo View Resort sits on a small key off the south shore of Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras. It can only be reached by water: a bus takes guests from the airport to the landing, then the resort’s boat makes the short crossing.
The heart of it is the Front Yard. A few fin kicks from the Clubhouse lie two walls — CoCo View Wall and Newman’s Wall — and the sunken tanker Prince Albert. Shore diving here is unlimited and open 24 hours a day: air waits on a 150-bottle tank rack, you walk in and walk out, no boat needed. Night dives from shore are part of the package too.
The resort was founded in 1982 by Bill and Evelyn Evans, and over forty-odd years it has built a reputation for the highest return rate of any dive resort: more than 1,600 guests, the site says, have been five times or more.
Accommodation is 29 rooms, all either at the water’s edge or directly over the water: bungalows and cabanas on stilts linked by wooden walkways, and oceanfront rooms right on the shoreline. There are also rooms up among the palms, a cottage on the canal and two beach houses. Every room has air conditioning, a mini-fridge, a coffee pot, a lockable box and a hammock.
Meals are included: three buffets a day in the Clubhouse, which doubles as dining room, bar and lounge with a pool table, a lending library and decks over the water. As a matter of policy the resort takes no cruise-ship or day guests.
No markup
You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

At the resort
Diving
The bottom off Roatan's south shore slopes gently, and about a hundred metres out, in 5–9 metres of water, the reef drops into a wall; there is a sandy ledge around 30–45 metres, then it goes vertical again. The morning trip starts at a moored site; after the first dive you can take a drop dive or stay aboard for a second mooring. The afternoon trip is one mooring plus one drop dive on the way home. Every arriving diver watches the orientation video and makes an orientation dive with a divemaster — included in the package. Night boat dives are arranged separately at $25 per person with a minimum of eight divers. Nitrox is available for an extra fee, certification required. Gloves are not permitted; the resort has held that line for more than twenty years.
Dining
Meals are fully included: three buffets a day in the Clubhouse. Breakfast brings made-to-order eggs and omelets, bacon, pancakes and waffles, fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurt. Lunch is a changing entrée with sandwiches, soups and salads, and red beans and rice are always on. Dinner is a salad bar, at least two entrées, vegetables and dessert. No dressing up required. Alcohol is not part of the plan and goes on your tab. Dietary needs should be flagged in advance.
Beyond diving
Snorkelling here is as effortless as the diving: the resort sits right on the reef edge and the wall top comes within a metre and a half of the surface in places. Snorkellers are welcome on the dive boats. Land excursions cost extra and are booked through the office: island tour $35, local eco tour $75, zip line $65, dolphin encounter $65 (snorkelling with them $100), horseback riding $45, one-hour massage $70. The resort marks all excursion prices as subject to change.

It is an easy walk or a quick bike ride to the dock; bicycles are provided.

Fully air-conditioned, with cable TV, Wi-Fi, a washer and dryer and daily maid service. It stands along the sandy path of Playa Miguel, a short walk or bike ride from the Clubhouse and dock.

The resort sells packages only, priced per person on double occupancy (the Mango Suite is priced for two). A package covers accommodation, three buffets a day, a welcome cocktail, transfers, unlimited shore and night diving, two boat trips a day, tanks, weights and belts, kayaks and internet. The resort names two commercial seasons: high from January to mid-September and value from mid-September to the end of the year. It advises preparing for around 25–26 °C, which will be comfortable in any month. No-see-ums are around all year with no particular season, so bring repellent.
Getting there
Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands, about 56 km off the north coast of Honduras. The island is long and narrow, 45 km end to end, fringed by the world’s second largest barrier reef.
You fly into Roatan International Airport (RTB), about 2.5 hours from the US. There are direct flights from Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Denver and Toronto, with charters added in high season.
You are met at the airport, taken by bus to the landing and then make the short crossing on the resort’s boat to the key. There is no other way in — no road reaches it, which is exactly why it is quiet here.
Transfers are free for stays of five nights or more; for shorter stays they cost $50 per person round trip. Passports must have at least six months’ validity remaining.
