Red Sea Explorer is a 43-metre liveaboard built in 2019 and diving the Red Sea since June of that year. Unlike most vessels in the region she is built entirely of steel, hull and superstructure alike. The ship is run by Extra Divers Worldwide and sails from Hurghada and Port Ghalib.

Twelve cabins across three decks take up to 24 guests. Every cabin has its own bathroom with a shower, individually controlled air conditioning, a safe, a mini fridge, a TV and a large window. The Superior cabins on the lower deck are the roomiest at 25 m², and one of them is set up for a family. The main deck holds three Master cabins; the upper deck has four more Superiors and the 45 m² Royal Suite with a 170° panoramic view, a rain shower and a private covered terrace steps from the sun deck.

The dive deck is sized for 24 divers: individual crate stations, tank racks, rinse tubs, a warm freshwater shower, a WC and a large camera table with its own sinks. Three to four dives a day are normal, two on the first and last day at sea. Divers are ferried by two six-metre Tiger Marine RIBs with four-stroke Yamahas, or enter straight from the dive platform. Twelve-litre DIN tanks, weights and a dive guide are in the price, and EAN 28–30 % nitrox is free to anyone with the certification. ENOS surface-location transmitters are carried for every guest — 24 of them.

Above are four sun decks with partial shading, loungers, bean bags and a barbecue area. The saloon has air conditioning, a bar, a library with fish ID books and a screen for briefings; meals are buffet style three times a day, with snacks, tea, coffee, water and soft drinks included. Wi-Fi is in the price, though there is no signal at the more remote reefs — worth planning around.

The itineraries cover the whole Egyptian coast: the northern wrecks including the Thistlegorm and Abu Nuhas, the Strait of Tiran and Ras Mohammed, the Brothers–Daedalus–Elphinstone triangle, the southern reefs of St. John’s, Fury Shoal, Zabargad and Rocky Island, and once a year a ten-night expedition to the Elba reefs on the Sudanese border.

The operator accepts Advanced Open Water divers, Open Water divers holding a Deep Diver certificate, or CMAS** — and asks for at least 50 logged dives, reduced to 30 on the St. John's routes. Your last dive must be recent: the operator's FAQ says no more than 12 months ago while its boat page says 15 months, so confirm when booking. Maximum depth is 40 metres with the appropriate certification, maximum dive time 60 minutes, and the operator asks divers to avoid decompression dives. A dive computer and an SMB are mandatory and solo diving is not allowed. Night dives are prohibited inside the national parks — the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone — where snorkelling is also banned, as it is at Rocky Island. Open Water courses are not run on board; other courses are available if booked in advance. The vessel does not carry spare equipment or parts, so bring your own complete kit.

Meals start with dinner on the day of arrival and end with breakfast on the day of departure. If you board after 21:00 no hot meal can be served. The operator states plainly that vegan dishes are not prepared on board and that gluten-free products are hard to source in Egypt — if this matters, raise it before booking.

Double / Twin

Beds: Double bed 180 × 195 cm or two singles

Four cabins on the upper deck, the closest to the sun deck and the saloon. Bed layout is chosen at booking — double or twin. Large windows, safe, mini fridge, TV and individually controlled air conditioning. Private bathroom with shower and WC; the bathroom window opens. There is no sofa or desk here, which is what makes these cabins more compact than the lower deck ones.

Suite

Beds: 1 king-size bed, 200 × 200 cm

The ship's only suite, known on board as The Real Big One. Forty-five square metres forward on the upper deck, a 170° panoramic view, a king-size bed of 200 × 200 cm, a seating area with armchairs, a desk, a TV, a Nespresso machine and a minibar with the first fill included. The bathroom has a rain shower. A private covered terrace sits a few steps from the sun deck.

Schedule & Pricing

BDE — Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone

The most celebrated route in the Red Sea. The Brothers Islands offer vertical walls in soft coral, the thresher shark cleaning station on Little Brother and two wrecks off Big Brother — the Numidia and the Aida. Further south lies Daedalus with its schooling hammerheads and the well-known anemone city, and the trip closes at Elphinstone, whose two plateaux draw curious oceanic whitetips. The bottom falls away into the blue straight off the reef, dives are drift dives and currents can be strong. Departures from Port Ghalib; night dives are not permitted inside the national park.

Daedalus, Zabargad and Rocky Island

Southern classics for big fish and empty reefs. Elphinstone with its northern and southern plateaux, Daedalus with hammerheads, then Zabargad — a 3.5 km island where an unnamed 70-metre wreck rests on the sand between 1 and 24 metres, its bridge and engine room open to explore. The finale is tiny Rocky Island: a sheer wall covered in gorgonians and fan corals, patrolled by grey reef and whitetip sharks, with dolphins passing through.

Daedalus and Fury Shoal

A mix of open-sea reefs and gentle shallow gardens. Shaab Claudio is an easy cavern system in shallow water with striking light beams, a favourite of photographers, surrounded by hard coral, morays and big Napoleon wrasse. Shaab Sataya, the Dolphin House, is a horseshoe reef whose lagoon often holds a pod of spinner dolphins — best met while snorkelling. Elphinstone and Daedalus add the shark encounters.

St. John's

The far south of the Egyptian coast, close to the Sudanese border. Dozens of reefs of every size rise from the seabed, and the highlight is the Cave Reef cavern system: shallow corridors pierced by shafts of light. On the way lie the Fury Shoals with plateaux, walls, coral gardens and caves; at Abu Galawa a small 1950s wreck sits at 18 metres and dolphins are frequent visitors. For this route the operator lowers its minimum to 30 logged dives.

St. John's, Zabargad and Rocky

An extended southern programme: the reefs and caverns of St. John's plus Zabargad island with its sand-bottom wreck and the sheer walls of Rocky Island. The reefs here are densely covered in soft and fan corals, and grey reef and whitetip sharks come in out of the blue.

North and Brothers

A repositioning route between Hurghada and Port Ghalib that pairs the northern wrecks with the Brothers Islands. It opens with the Thistlegorm, her holds full of trucks and motorcycles and a locomotive lying on the seabed alongside, then the Abu Nuhas ship graveyard with four wrecks at moderate depth. It ends at Big and Little Brother with their walls, the Numidia, the Aida and the sharks.

North and Tiran

The classic northern route out of Hurghada. The Thistlegorm, the four Abu Nuhas wrecks, and the reefs of the Strait of Tiran — Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas and Gordon — with soft corals, turtles and clouds of fusiliers. The finale is Ras Mohammed: the bottomless wall at Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef, where the cargo of a sunken freighter still lies scattered among the corals — bathtubs, toilets and the remains of a car.

North and Wrecks

A route for those who like steel. The Thistlegorm, the four Abu Nuhas wrecks, the Ulysses at Little Gubal between 5 and 27 metres and the wall at Bluff Point. Weather and current permitting, the Rosalie Moller is added — a hundred-metre wreck in the Strait of Gubal lying between 20 and 50 metres, packed with glassfish and lionfish, and not suitable for newer divers. The cheapest route on the schedule.

Deep South and Elba Reef

Ten nights in an area few liveaboards visit: three reefs just north of the Sudanese border that the operator calls the Elba region. Huge sea fans line the edge of the plateau, with grey reef sharks and hammerheads passing by. Off the eastern reef lies the Levanzo — propeller at around 22 metres, the break in the hull visible at forty, and the whole wreck running down to 65 metres. A dive for the experienced.
