Grand Discovery

MY Grand Discovery is the newest vessel of the Egyptian operator Discovery Divers: 45 metres long, 9.5 in the beam, launched in December 2025. Her name is spelled out in letters on the superstructure, and the same name is printed on the tank bands down on the dive deck. The same fleet runs two smaller wooden boats — Discovery I (32 m) and Discovery II (37 m); Grand Discovery is not related to them, she is a separate steel hull of a different generation.

There are eighteen cabins and thirty-six berths, and this is one of those rare cases where the layout adds up room by room. From the deck plan: six twins on the lower deck (nos. 01–06), six twins on the upper deck (nos. 07–12), two panorama suites in the bow of the upper deck (nos. 13, 14) and four master suites on the high deck (nos. 15–18), two of them with a minibar. Every cabin has air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom; there are twenty-three bathrooms on board in total. Both the operator and the aggregator quote “24 cabins” in their marketing copy — that figure is wrong: the operator’s own booking system lists exactly eighteen cabin numbers, and the deck plan draws the same eighteen rooms.

The boat was built for diving. The dive deck fills the whole after part of the lower deck: individual tank stations, crates for gear, rinse tanks, DIN adaptors, room to rig sidemount. Two Bauer compressors at 450 l/min, a separate 1000 l/min nitrox membrane unit, 52 aluminium tanks in 12 and 15 litres. Nitrox up to 32% in a 12-litre tank is free — an important correction to the earlier version of this page, which listed nitrox as a paid extra. Three tenders take divers off the boat: two 6.5 m zodiacs with Yamaha 115 hp outboards and a 5.2 m boat with a 40 hp engine.

Common areas: a saloon with deep sofas, a large TV, a music system, a small library and a fully stocked bar; a separate dining area with buffet service; two shaded sun decks, one of them with a bar; an open-air dining area aft, and the top deck with a Jacuzzi. That Jacuzzi is sometimes advertised as a “spa” — it is a Jacuzzi, there is no spa on board.

One thing to know before you book: the operator never mentions Wi-Fi — not on the vessel page, not in the terms, not in the list of what the fare covers inside its own booking system — although the aggregator lists it as included. We cannot confirm connectivity on board and suggest you check this point when booking.

Grand Discovery runs out of Hurghada (Sheraton Marina) on two week-long programmes: Brothers–Daedalus–Elphinstone and the northern Wrecks, Ras Mohammed, Tiran, Brothers & Safaga. Check-in and check-out are on Saturdays, she sails early on Sunday morning and is back in port on Friday around 15:30.
