Philippine Siren is a 40-metre sail-motor schooner, hand-built on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi from ironwood and teak. She is the largest vessel of the Siren family and the only liveaboard of the fleet working in the Philippines. Eight cabins host up to 16 guests, looked after by a crew of 12 that includes three dive guides.
The yacht was built by divers for divers. The dive deck is huge: everyone gets their own station with a rack and a personal locker, plus rinse hoses, separate tanks for camera gear and a fresh-water shower right at the exit from the water. The saloon holds a professional camera station with charging points and large storage bins. Two high-powered RIB tenders run guests to the dive sites, and two MCH 13 compressors supply air and nitrox. Rebreathers are not supported on board.
An air-conditioned saloon with a cocktail bar, comfortable sofas and a large screen, a shaded open-deck dining area facing the ocean, a sun deck with loungers, massage and laundry service. All eight cabins are on the lower deck, each with individually controlled air conditioning, a private en-suite bathroom with hot water, bathrobes and towels.
The itineraries cover the whole diving map of the Philippines: seasonal Tubbataha (March to June) — a UNESCO site of sheer walls and hammerheads, Malapascua with its thresher sharks, the sardine run off Moalboal, the macro sites of Dauin and Apo, the reefs of Cabilao and Balicasag, and Sogod Bay in Southern Leyte.

Southern Visayas (Mactan — Mactan)
A short itinerary through the best of the southern Visayas: Cebu, Cabilao, Balicasag, Pescador, the Apo Island marine sanctuary and the critter capital Dauin. Steep walls dotted with sea fans, sandy shallows with frogfish, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses, huge schools of barracuda and jacks. Off Moalboal and Pescador shy thresher sharks come in to feed on the sardine run, and whale sharks are possible year round. Runs July to September, sometimes starting from Moalboal instead of Cebu.

The most popular ten-night itinerary: the entire Visayan area plus Malapascua. Up to 32 dives, night dives included. Malapascua is the reason people come — thresher sharks rise from the depths to the Monad Shoal cleaning station at dawn. Along the way, the walls of Cabilao and Balicasag, the sardine run and the macro of Bohol. If you only visit the Philippines once, this is the trip the operator recommends.

The winter programme, October to February: the classic Visayas plus Limasawa and Sogod Bay in Southern Leyte. The topography ranges from gentle sandy fringing reefs and protected mangroves to steep walls covered in sea fans and sponges. The macro here is spectacular — frogfish, ghost pipefish, octopus, pygmy seahorses and a wide range of nudibranchs. Whale sharks move in towards the end of the season, and Malapascua brings the thresher sharks.

2 departuresTubbataha National Park (Puerto Princesa — Puerto Princesa)
The fleet's most sought-after itinerary — six nights and up to 18 dives, sunset dives included. The Tubbataha reef system lies 150 km south-east of Puerto Princesa, covers 970 km² and is reachable only by liveaboard. It is the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the Coral Triangle: two atolls plus Jessie Beazley reef, more than 600 fish species and over 300 coral species, with giant sea fans. Diving is mostly along vertical walls and drop-offs — hammerheads, thresher sharks, whale sharks, green and hawksbill turtles. A ranger station on the north atoll is manned year round and you can visit it during the trip. The park is open March to June only.

The fleet's longest Philippine programme — 13 nights and up to 42 dives. It is a transition itinerary between two regions, so it runs only twice a year: at the end of February when the vessel heads for the Tubbataha season, and at the end of May when she returns. Five to six days inside Tubbataha National Marine Park plus the highlights of the southern Visayas. Departure and arrival ports differ, so at least one domestic flight is needed. These dates sell out fastest.
