Sea Pearl is a 36-metre two-masted topsail schooner and the oldest vessel in the fleet of the Seychelles operator Silhouette Cruises. She was built in 1915 in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands, as a sail-fishing vessel named Dirk, and by 1930 she was the last sailing ship left in the Dutch herring fleet. In 1992 the hull was converted to a schooner rig and she sailed the Caribbean and Canada as Regina Chatarina. In 1999, after a complete refit, she arrived in the Seychelles as Sea Pearl.
This is not a modern dive yacht but a working sailing ship with a riveted steel hull, manual rigging and about 520 sqm of sail. When the wind allows, guests are invited to help the crew set the sails. Below and on deck there is mahogany joinery, an air-conditioned saloon with TV and stereo, a covered aft-deck lounge, a padded sundeck and bow netting that doubles as a hammock under way.
The cabin layout matters here. There are eight cabins, all air-conditioned and each with its own wash basin, but showers and toilets are compartmentalised separately and shared by everyone on board: four showers, three toilets and one deck shower. No cabin has a private bathroom. Six Category A cabins have a double bed with an upper bunk, and two Category B cabins have single bunk beds. A crew of eight looks after up to 20 guests: captain, engineer, two deckhands, two stewardesses, a chef and a PADI dive instructor.
The programme runs through the inner granitic islands and changes twice a year. From November to April it is seven nights out of Port Victoria on Mahé: Praslin with the Vallée de Mai, La Digue, the Sisters islands, Coco, Aride, Curieuse, Ile Seche and a last night in the Ste Anne Marine Park. From May to October it is six nights out of Anse Possession on Praslin: Curieuse, La Digue, the Vallée de Mai, the Cousin Island reserve and Anse Lazio.
Diving is one of the activities rather than the backbone of the cruise, and it is charged separately. Two dives a day is the norm, depths run 8–20 metres, and the sites are granite boulders, swim-throughs and caves with turtles, rays, barracuda, jacks and reef sharks. Visibility peaks at up to 30 metres in March–May and from October to early December. There is no nitrox on board, and no internet either. Snorkelling, kayaks, paddleboards and bottom-line fishing are included.

Diving on board
Diving is not included in the cruise fare and is paid separately: 40 € for the first dive of the day, 20 € for each dive after that, plus 15 % government tax. Weekly packages of 8 or 12 dives are available. Courses must be arranged before arrival — the theory is completed online in advance.
Food and drink
Tell the crew about dietary requirements in advance — the galley is small. You may bring your own drinks, but a corkage fee applies. Table water is free; bottled mineral water is charged.

A first anchorage at Round Island off Praslin, the Vallée de Mai reserve with its coco de mer palms and black parrots, La Digue by bicycle and Anse Source d’Argent, the uninhabited Grande Soeur and Petite Soeur, the granite islet of Coco, diving at Booby Island, the Aride bird reserve, Curieuse with its giant tortoises and mangroves, a last dive at Ile Seche and a night in the Ste Anne Marine Park.
