Magdalena Bay is a 50 km long bay on the western coast of the Baja Peninsula, Baja California Sur. It is separated from the Pacific Ocean by the sandy islands of Isla Magdalena and Isla Santa Margarita. Mangrove swamps in the bay provide excellent conditions for seabirds and numerous fish species. In October and November, the world’s second largest “Sardine Run” occurs in the nutrient-rich churning blue waters near the bay, where striped marlins gather to hunt. The route includes dives to the wreck of a World War I submarine and the sunken passenger steamship SS Independence. Here you can encounter humpback whales, California sea lions, and dolphins, and with luck — orcas and blue whales.
