The “Golden Triangle” of the Red Sea — a route for those seeking sharks and walls. Brother Islands, Daedalus, and Elphinstone are three offshore reefs reachable only by liveaboard. This is Egypt’s most iconic route and one of the world’s best for encountering large pelagic species.
Brother Islands are two uninhabited islands 140 km from Hurghada and 60 km offshore. Underwater mountain peaks with walls dropping vertically for hundreds of meters. Big Brother features walls covered in soft corals and gorgonian forests. Two wrecks lie here: Aida II — an Egyptian supply vessel, and Numidia — a cargo ship, both encrusted with corals and now part of the reef. Little Brother is a tongue-shaped reef extension with a fan coral forest starting at 35 meters, plus caves and overhangs. Both islands host hammerhead and grey reef sharks, oceanic whitetips, silkies, tuna, and barracudas. Thresher shark encounters are rare but do occur.
Daedalus Reef is an oval reef with a lighthouse, Egypt’s most remote offshore reef, 52 nautical miles from Marsa Alam (about 6 hours sailing). Its isolation and marine park status have preserved Daedalus as one of the Red Sea’s most pristine reefs. Monumental hard coral formations, steep walls with soft corals. On the northern plateau — one of the best chances to see hammerhead sharks, especially on morning dives.
Elphinstone is a 300-meter reef 30 km from Port Ghalib. Sheer walls covered in pink and red soft corals and gorgonians drop to 40 meters and beyond. Some sections feature vertical cliffs, overhangs, and small caves with drops of up to 100 meters. The south and north plateaus are the points where oceanic whitetip sharks most frequently appear.
Between sites — overnight crossings of 6–8 hours. Up to 16 dives per week, including night and twilight dives. Zodiac entries for precise current approaches. The route requires a minimum of 50 dives and Advanced Open Water — depths and currents are serious. Season — March–November.
