Bahia de Los Angeles is located in a biosphere reserve established in 2007. The reserve covers an area of about 400 hectares and includes part of the Baja coast, 16 islands and numerous small islets, the Salsipuedes Channel and the Las Ballenas Channel. The area is situated between the Sierra San Borja mountains and the waters of the Gulf of California. Each summer, up to 220 whale sharks gather at the southern end of the bay. The California sea lion colony numbers over 1,200 individuals. Diving here is superb, and the sea lion colonies further enhance the experience. Fin whales and five species of sea turtles are also found here.
