Liquid Dive Adventures is a small family-run resort and dive centre on Tofo beach in Mozambique’s Inhambane province. Twelve bungalows sit right on the sand, in a quiet stretch of beach a short walk from the village’s cafés and bars.

It is run by a Finnish family — Satu, Jari and their sons Aaron and Henrik. They arrived in Tofo on a round-the-world trip, watched humpback whales breaching from the beach, and stayed: in 2014 they bought the dive centre, which then had one boat and a handful of gear; in 2017 an old lodge right on the beach; and in November 2018 they opened on the new site. Today there are twelve bungalows, two restaurants, a beach bar, a pool, a yoga deck and their own vegetable garden.

Tofo is about big animals. Whale sharks and mantas stay close to shore all year round because the water is thick with plankton; from June to October humpback whales pass through on their way up from Antarctica to breed and calve. The deep reefs hold manta cleaning stations, and the northern sites bring reef and leopard sharks.

Liquid is a PADI Green Star centre and the first Shark Guardian dive centre in Africa, a PADI eco centre and a career development centre teaching all the way to instructor. Every course includes a Project AWARE specialty, and the centre has adopted four local dive sites where it runs a debris survey every month.

The kitchen matches: HAPPI is the only vegetarian restaurant in the Inhambane area, and MERI serves fish caught by local fishermen on rod and line — never prawns, octopus or reef fish. On Thursdays an ocean documentary is screened beside the pool.

No markup

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

We run the deal

Correspondence with the resort, holding the room, the contract, booking confirmation and all paperwork are on our side. There is nothing for you to arrange yourself.

Card payment

We accept payment by card through Stripe and issue an invoice. The transfer to the resort is our job — you do not have to find a way to pay abroad.

Support all the way

We help you choose the room and dates, work out the dive package, answer questions about flights and gear, and stay in touch until you are home.

The exact amount is confirmed when we hold your booking: it includes the resort's rate at the day's exchange rate plus the actual transfer costs. No hidden fees.

One price per dive on any site: **there is no far-reef surcharge and no government tax**. Conditions in Tofo change daily — the deep sites can run current and the shallow ones can get surge, so the timetable and the choice of site are decided in the morning. Groups are small. From December to May the water is 25–28 °C and a 3 mm suit is enough; from June to October it drops to around 20 °C and the centre provides a 5 mm with an optional vest and hood. Visibility is 20–30 metres from December to June and 5–15 metres from July to September.

The Ocean Safari leaves from the dive centre daily, led by a rescue diver; masks, snorkels and fins are provided. The resort wrote its own protocol for whale encounters: the boat cuts its engine no closer than 150 metres, people enter the water only if the whales are calm and the visibility lets you see the length of the boat, and there is no touching and no flash photography. Groups are two to six people, and every guide is a certified Humpback Whale Conservation Specialist.

When to go

Best time
All year; whales June to October, calmest water May to July

Whale sharks and mantas stay off Tofo all year. Humpback whales pass through from June to November, and the resort runs its whale trips from July to the end of September. The hottest months are January, February and March, up to the mid-thirties by day; the coolest are June to October, in the mid-twenties by day and around eighteen at night. Rain falls January to April, but Tofo has its own microclimate and gets considerably less than Inhambane 25 km away. August and September are the windiest months. The owners rate the stretch from Easter to early July as the best of the year: empty sites, good visibility, calm seas, the water still warm and the big animals still around. Christmas and New Year are loud and crowded in the village.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Inhambane (INH), a thirty-minute drive from Tofo, served by Mozambique’s LAM from Maputo and Johannesburg. You can also fly into Vilanculos, from where the resort arranges a transfer, or into Maputo: the Etrago bus takes about ten hours and costs around twenty euro, while a private transfer starts at €500 return.

The time zone is GMT+2 and the languages are Portuguese and English. Citizens of twenty-nine countries need no visa: since 1 May 2023 they pay a fee of about 650 meticais (around €9) on arrival and show a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Everyone else needs a visa; it can be obtained on arrival in Maputo or Vilanculos, but check the current rules before you fly. A tourist visa is valid for thirty days.

Car hire is available in Maputo and Johannesburg, the roads are fine and a 4x4 is not necessary.
