Wadi Lahami is the third and southernmost Red Sea Diving Safari village, 10 km south of the village of Hamata. This is the edge of the settled coast: 180 km to Marsa Alam airport, nearly 400 to Hurghada. It is the smallest of the three camps, and guest numbers are capped on purpose — for the quiet, and for the reef.

Lahami sits on the doorstep of the Fury Shoals, an enormous reef complex whose hard coral formations are considered some of the finest examples anywhere in the world. Canyons and swim-throughs, wrecks, coral gardens and drop-offs: there are enough types of dive here for any level. Some of the sites are classics of the Deep South liveaboard route — Shaab Claudia, Abu Galawa, Maksour, Angel, Satayah. Others sit off the boat routes entirely and are barely known, let alone dived.

All diving is by RIB. There is no shore entry: even the house reef, Torfa, is a boat dive — the RIB drops you at the right spot. The classic programme runs up to four dives a day at fixed times: two guided dives in zones 1 and 2, and two unguided afternoon dives in zone 1. Zone 3 — the furthest and most famous reefs — costs extra.

Satayah, the Dolphin Reef, is a horseshoe-shaped reef nearly five kilometres long, less than an hour from the village. Spinner dolphins rest in its shallow lagoons during the day; a pod can number 80–100 animals, and they are usually happy to share the water with snorkellers and freedivers as long as the approach is quiet and respectful.

Lahami’s second life is kitesurfing. A large, shallow, sandy-bottomed lagoon lies right in front of the beach, the wind blows year-round, and the water is almost empty. There is a kite station with Core and Airush rental and courses from a first taster to the full eight- or twelve-hour programme. The Yellow Penguin bar, with its fire pit, sits right there, away from the main hub of the village.

North of the village lie mangroves — among the largest stands in the Middle East. Ospreys and herons nest here, spoonbills visit, and there are kingfishers, swallows, stonechats, pipits and wagtails. In the migration months this is a place for a birdwatcher rather than a diver.

Accommodation comes in two categories: royal tents by the mangroves and domed Deluxe chalets with terraces on both sides.

You pay exactly the rate the resort publishes. On top of that, only the actual bank costs of currency conversion and the international transfer — no commission of ours.

Suitable for divers of any level

Lahami's dive sites are split into three zones. Packages and diving days cover zones 1 and 2; zone 3 — Maksour, Satayah, Shaab Malahi and Shaab Angel — carries a €24 supplement per dive. The reefs here are shallow and sheltered, which suits beginners and snorkellers alike. The dive shade stands on the beach by the RIB mooring: white boards with zone 1 site maps, lockable boxes, hangers, two rinse pools, eight fresh-water showers, 220 V sockets and three changing rooms. Tanks are pre-loaded onto the boats. In winter the sea can be rough and a RIB is unforgiving — bring a wind jacket and a cap for the surface interval, and be honest about your back and your health. The recompression chamber is in Hamata, 10 km north; every diver pays €7 towards its support programme. Professional PADI courses are not run at Lahami — they take place in Marsa Shagra and Marsa Nakari.

Speciality coffee, diet drinks, juices, beer, chocolate, crisps and ice cream are charged to the room and settled on departure. Guests are given a water bottle to refill from the coolers around the site. The cafeteria also sells souvenirs, travel essentials and Egyptian natural cosmetics. The Yellow Penguin bar sits by the kite station in front of the sandy bay, with a fire pit beside it — a place for the evening that is separate from the village.

The kite station sits apart from the village, in front of a large shallow bay with a sandy bottom. The wind blows year-round and there is plenty of room on the water — unlike the busier kite spots up the coast. Station service costs €17 a day for village guests, and a full equipment set €121 a day. The mangroves north of the village are protected: they are among the largest stands in the Middle East and a nesting ground for many bird species.

Prices in euro per person per night, full board. High season runs March to December, low season is January and February. In winter there are festive dinner supplements: €22 on 24 December, €28 on 31 December, €44 for both. "Single" is the rate for one person in the room. Children under 5 stay free in their parents' room, 6 to 15 get 50% off in the same room. Triple occupancy takes €5 per person per day off. Stays of two weeks or more get €5 a day off from the second week; four weeks or more get 30% off accommodation and diving.

When to go

The village is open year-round, and so is the wind for kiting. In winter the sea can be rough and every dive here starts from a RIB — bring a wind jacket and a cap for the surface interval. For birdwatching, the migration months are best. Check-in is from 14:00, check-out by 12:00; arrival before midnight counts as a full night, from midnight to 10:00 as half. Paying cash on site in euro, dollars or pounds earns a 5% discount.

Getting there

Lahami is the most distant of the three villages. The nearest airport is Marsa Alam (RMF), 180 km away, about two and a half hours by road. From Hurghada (HRG) it is 393 km, roughly five hours. A driver meets guests at the terminal exit; the transfer is paid separately and depends on the number of passengers: €98 one way from Marsa Alam if you travel alone, €33–41 if there is a group. Marsa Nakari costs from €22, Marsa Shagra from €25.

The village sits 10 km south of Hamata, at the very edge of the settled coast. It is a long drive — but the Fury Shoals begin right outside the bay, and there is almost nobody around.
